Your beneficiaries will not be personally responsible for your debts unless they have co-signed on a loan or other legal document. When you pass away with unpaid credit card bills or medical expenses, creditors have an opportunity to file claims during the probate process. These claims will be prioritized and may be paid from the probate estate, but your individual beneficiaries bear no responsibility for those debts. The debts will not follow your beneficiaries for the rest of their lives.
